The Great Photographers apps series, available in Italian and in English for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, represents our first foray into digital publishing, taking an entirely new approach to the work and the lives of great photographers by providing an alternative reading to the classic printed monograph. It's a new way of thinking about photography. It's a new way of looking at it, understanding it, and experiencing it.
Every one of Contrasto's books, and every publication that we bring to the public represents an attempt to meet the challenge of finding new languages, new artists, and new codes by which photography recounts, experiences, and imagines the world. This is why, alongside our continuing collection of great titles, important monographs, innovative studies, and avant-garde authors, Contrasto is inaugurating this series of Apps designed for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. The first of the series is dedicated to Mario Giacomelli and his great, immortal photography, including both his most celebrated images and many which are not as well-known.
But collection is more than just photographs - it's enriched by interviews, critical writings, a biographical account of the artist's intense and vibrant life, and much more. The app also includes unedited documents, video and audio segments, interviews, and a very special and super-contemporary collection of "photography classes" which draw directly from Giacomelli's images. In short, this is a virtual exhibit. It's both comprehensive and truly gripping - the "reader-viewer" is virtually transported into the gallery to experience the photographic series conceived by the master from Senigallia exactly as he intended them. After Giacomelli, the app series will continue with other great names in photography like Sebastião Salgado and William Klein, thus creating a unique library of personal encounters, photographs, and other one-of-a-kind offerings. It's a new and comprehensive way of getting to know and experiencing photography, a new way for both students and enthusiasts alike to study the lives and work of the great masters, at a very affordable price.
This App is available in English, Italian and French for iPad. It contains 393 images that can be viewed individually or in slideshow and which you can zoom-in on with simple touch technology. The photographs are enriched by texts and captions written by Klein and dynamically connected to many contents in different appís sections: it allows the user to have a meaningful, personal journey through the most extensive digital collection of Klein's work available today
An innovative graphic design guides the reader-spectator in an articulate journey across a number of specific paths. Each path intends to study in depth different aspects of Kleinís body of work. The App is also equipped with an interactive path, My Klein, that gives the user the possibility to select oneís favourite pictures and build a hypothetical exhibition to share on social networks.
Unedited "photography lessons" by Alessia Tagliaventi, guide us into the artist's method of composition, and into his poetic sensibility.
Kleinís universe is explored by critical essays by prominent figures of the history of photography as Robert Delpire, Max Kozloff, Alessandra Mauro, Quentin Bajac and David Campany;
Interesting video contributions and exclusive interviews with Jean-Paul Goude and Klein carried out appropriately for this App; video footage in which Klein comments his images, tells us about his work and illustrates his poetics
The William Klein Ė The Great Photographers App is therefore a new experience of close critic examination and interactivity on the complex work of this incredible artist. For the first time William Klein is described not only through his images and his essays, but also through his films, his paintings, his words and through the direct account of those who have chosen to tell us, in this specific occasion, the great artist.
The App dedicated to William Klein is the second and unmissable chapter of the The Great Photographers apps series. After Giacomelli Contrasto brings to the public a total immersion in the complex artistic universe of one of the greatest international photographers. William Klein has an incredibly eclectic creativity: photographer, film director, painter. The App not only allows you to surf the photographerís images, but also to view excerpts of his main feature films and admire a selection of his paintings representing a completely new way of knowing and experiencing William Kleinís work, thanks to the richness of the content, the interactivity and the exceptionally high visual quality.
