App Showcase Great Photogaphers - where art and technology meet

The Series

The Great Photographers apps series, available in Italian and in English for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, represents our first foray into digital publishing, taking an entirely new approach to the work and the lives of great photographers by providing an alternative reading to the classic printed monograph. It's a new way of thinking about photography. It's a new way of looking at it, understanding it, and experiencing it.

Every one of Contrasto's books, and every publication that we bring to the public represents an attempt to meet the challenge of finding new languages, new artists, and new codes by which photography recounts, experiences, and imagines the world. This is why, alongside our continuing collection of great titles, important monographs, innovative studies, and avant-garde authors, Contrasto is inaugurating this series of Apps designed for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. The first of the series is dedicated to Mario Giacomelli and his great, immortal photography, including both his most celebrated images and many which are not as well-known.

But collection is more than just photographs - it's enriched by interviews, critical writings, a biographical account of the artist's intense and vibrant life, and much more. The app also includes unedited documents, video and audio segments, interviews, and a very special and super-contemporary collection of "photography classes" which draw directly from Giacomelli's images. In short, this is a virtual exhibit. It's both comprehensive and truly gripping - the "reader-viewer" is virtually transported into the gallery to experience the photographic series conceived by the master from Senigallia exactly as he intended them. After Giacomelli, the app series will continue with other great names in photography like Sebastiäo Salgado and William Klein, thus creating a unique library of personal encounters, photographs, and other one-of-a-kind offerings. It's a new and comprehensive way of getting to know and experiencing photography, a new way for both students and enthusiasts alike to study the lives and work of the great masters, at a very affordable price.

  • The Mario Giacomelli App offers a totally new way of exploring the life of great photographer through a web of cross-references, paths, and touch functions which allow users to make their own comparisons, answer their own questions, and satisfy their curiosity. It's a completely new way of drawing connections, and it allows the user to have a meaningful, personal journey through the most extensive digital collection of Giacomelli's work available today, at a very affordable price.

  • The app contains three hundred photographs in high definition, which you can zoom-in on with simple touch technology; among these images are the photographic "series" which have come to define Mario Giacomelli's signature style, as well as the texts and the poems that inspired him.

  • Unedited "photography classes" by Alessia Tagliaventi, guide us into the artist's method of composition, and into his poetic sensibility. The photographs are dynamically connected to critical analysis by Goffredo Fofi, Roberta Valtorta, Alessandra Mauro, Ferdinando Scianna, Christian Caujoulle, Paolo Morello, and Alistair Crawford, and to an interview with the artist himself by the great photographer Frank Horvat.

  • Video contributions by Enzo Carli, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Tullio Pericoli, Alessandra Mauro, and Achille Bonito Oliva. You can retrace the life of Giacomelli through a family album and by listening to the voice of his son Simone, and each user can create a personal album of the photographs that most affect them. The Mario Giacomelli/Great Photographers App is thus an entirely new experience, it's a total immersion into a photographer's world, a story told not only through photos and texts, but also through the words of the artist himself and firsthand accounts by those who took this opportunity to remember a photographer, a man, an artist, and a friend.
